Romania, Belgium

This Romanian film was the winner of the Cannes Film Festival. The Palme d’Or deals with the sensitive issue of clandestine abortions. It’s the end of the 1980s. Abortion is illegal and punishable in Romania, but not Gabita. A student decides to do it and, together with her friend Otilia, raises money to have the procedure done. Otilia is the main character in this movie, which is insanely interesting to watch because it so accurately embodies her image of Anamaria Marinka. An incredibly strong movie.

This movie is an example of friendship that doesn’t hinder friendship because of religion and cultural differences. Rachel and Nazira are both teachers at a school in Brooklyn. Both are somewhat introverted, taciturn, and at the same time capable of having vibrant personalities. Only one is Muslim and the other is Jewish. Together they have to stand up for their rights, including friendship and love because it’s time for both of them to get married. And their families are already actively looking for future husbands.

The winner of the Odessa International Film Festival. Although the Goya and Cesar awards tell the story of five teenage sisters in the care of their grandmother, parents, and uncle after their deaths, any of their innocent pranks, games or even their clothes are seen by their neighbors and guardians. as a sign that the young beauties have strayed from the right path. Because, who will marry such people? Gradually, the house where the girls live turns into cages. They can only get out of it if a worthy candidate appears on the doorstep.

Since, the film raises poignant questions about child marriage, the conservative ways girls have to put up with, and the clash of civilizations. “Mustang” is somewhat similar to Sofia Coppola’s dramas Suicide Virgins. However, the ending of Ergüven’s film differs from the tragic ending of the second one. Although not all, the sisters manage to avoid the fate of the bride girls and escape.
