2021/Thriller, Horror/USA, Canada
The seventh film in the rating is a sequel to the 1992 film of the same name about a black maniac with a hook instead of a hand, who killed his victims by appearing in a mirror. In the latest version, the main character of the film is the artist Anthony McCoy, who finds inspiration for his performance in the legend of Candyman. The next morning, after the premiere, not only success and delight from art lovers await him, but also a couple of corpses in the gallery. The film by Nia Dacosta was expectedly favored by foreign film critics but did not get into almost any Russian rating.
The domestic moviegoer saw in the film overly intrusive exploitation of the BLM theme, which was clearly facilitated by the presence of Jordan Peel as a screenwriter. At the same time, it is worth noting that the authors of the tape did not repeat their predecessors, but supplemented and expanded the Candyman universe, which turned out beautiful.
The Boy Behind the Door
“Hide” is another bright genre debut of the outgoing year. Two boys, Kevin and Bobby, wake up in the trunk of a car where they have been dragged by a mysterious kidnapper. They are taken to an abandoned house on the outskirts, where Bobby initially manages to escape. At the last moment, he hears Kevin scream and returns to rescue his friend. For the next hour and a half, Bobby and the criminal will wander around the house, playing hide and seek and cat and mouse at the same time. Events are shown predominantly from the point of view of a 12-year-old child. All the action in the picture takes place in almost one location, and this is due not only to the rules of the genre but also to a limited budget.
Debut directors David Charbonnier and Justin Powell said they couldn’t even afford to re-paste the wallpaper in the room. The props consisted almost entirely of improvised materials. As a result, “Hide” became an example of an Interesting Independent Film, which was included in the program of the American Fantastic Fest and received 97% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite more than modest box office fees, the director’s dream of developing the story into a franchise was dashed.
Closes the Top of the best horror films of 2021 with the 12th film from the Halloween series. The silent maniac Michael Myers is again the most alive and continues to pursue Laurie Strode and her family. But now the whole city is standing up for its defense – people are uniting to put an end to evil forever. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Fans of “Halloween” will be pleased with the cast – the main character Laurie Strode is again played, Jamie Lee Curtis. The role of Michael Myers in some scenes is again played by Nick Castle.
They were also joined by Kyle Richards, Charles Cyphers, and Nancy Stevens, returning to the roles they played in the original 1978 film. There is criticism of the new film in the reviews, and accusations of tension, but the popularity rating suggests that the new picture about Michael Myers will still be watched. The final part of this trilogy.
