The Essential Space and Sci-Fi Movies to Watch Now

Space and Sci-Fi Movies

WALL-E

2008/Adventure, Family Movies, Animation/USA

The people who left the Earth left the robot to rake mountains of garbage on the planet. But the old “WALL-E” will be able to meet friends, rise to the stars, and even “re-educate” their former owners. Wall-E has been called an “environmental masterpiece” and “the most experimental and daring film” Pixar has ever made. However, the cartoon poetically warns earthlings about the consequences of a barbaric attitude. The environment and our growing dependence on automation and technology are bonuses. A Cute Love Story between two robots and beautiful animation.

Sunshine

2007/Adventure, Thriller/UK

The sun is fading, and the earth is threatened with eternal winter and the death of all life. The only way to revive a dying star is to launch a nuclear bomb into it, which must be delivered into space by a specially trained team. Such a story would probably look extremely stupid if it came out of the hands of any other director. However, Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and writer Alex Garland (The Beach) keep the audience entertained, filling the Inferno with grandiose ideas and rich characters. However, the sense of existential threat, the excellent cast (Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh), and the unexpected twist in the third act perfectly complement this thriller about survival in space.

Solaris

1972/USSR

A psychologist goes to a space station orbiting a planet called Solaris. His goal is to investigate the strange death of a doctor and the mental problems of scientists at the station. He soon discovers that the ocean covering the planet is a type of living brain that triggers repressed memories and obsessions in the freight forwarders. To clarify, there are two films called Solaris, and both are based on the same 1961 novel by Stanislav Lem. A 1972 film by Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky, as well as a 2002 film adaptation by Steven Soderbergh with George Clooney. Both films are great, but the American version did not make it to our top.
